Treasure 7…my Montblanc pen

This was my birthday  present from MrSpud last year and I adore it. I had been hinting for a ‘nice pen’ and then held my breath and hoped for the best, and this was a really excellent choice…complete with a sapphire to match my engagement ring (although MrSpud admitted he had no clue that this was the case, just a lucky fluke!)

As we all know MrSpud has a record of poor gift choices but, to be fair, sometimes he’s right on the money. For my birthday one year he booked us in to a very swanky hotel as a surprise. We went out for the evening, and he then suggested a drink at said hotel. But when we got there he shovelled me in to a lift and produced a room key. He’d even packed a bag of clothes and make up for me, and stashed it in the room. To complete the lovliness he’d hidden all manner of perfect gifts all over the room…perfume…champagne…champagne glasses etc etc. So, you see, sometimes MrSpud Gets It Right.

Let’s pass over the year I did all the Christmas shopping and told him the only present he had to buy was his father’s (beyond my gift buying expertise). So he did. He only bought a present for his Dad, and nothing for me, and then claimed, “But you didn’t tell me I had to buy a present for you!”. Hmmmm.

  1. Yes, there is something really nice about fountain pens, I have one, not as nice as yours but still. Never use it though!

The hotel birthday surpise made me think there are some good men out there after all. Sounds absolutely wonderful. I think after that I would forgive any gift disasters for at least five years.

  2. Oh, but the hotel surprise sounds lovely! I can’t believe that was the same man that bought you the you-know-what! :) I kind of understand him not buying you a present that Christmas, though. We really need to spell it out for men sometimes, don’t we? Sight!

  3. I am deeply impressed at MrSpuds good taste! So here I have to confess a story about my Montblanc fountain pen which I got as a present from my hubby. I was impressed by the pen but somehow it never wrote properly. After years of frustrated hardly-ever-writing-with-it I went to a specialized shop and they told me the feather was somehow damaged. apparently our little one had tried it just after I got it. and only then I got to know that the pen was worth well over 300 euros which I wasn’t absolutely aware of!!!
and yes, I agree with polly, the hotel surprise was to delete any of bad gift-memories…

  4. hey! can jorge hang out with mrspud for a while?… i´m still waiting for my surprise b-day present… besos! p.s. thank you for your sweet comments- coming from you and all your awesomeness is a real compliment! happy week!

  5. Oh, you’d better watch out! Mr.Spud is sounding better and better. It’s a good thing you live on a different continent, I’d come try to adopt him. Mind you I have a husband of my own, and I’m not living in Utah, but I could think of something!

The b-day surprise sounds heavenly. Every girls dream. That would be hard to top. The pen is beautiful. My hubby collect fountain pens and has a Montblonc, but not with a gem! He uses his and has converted our daughter into being a fountain pen user as well.

Ahh, the little things, can make such a difference!

  6. I love your list of treasures, very precious indeed. And your day in London looks tops – I hadn’t noticed the new yellow staircase at the Hayward so will have to check it out! xx

  7. i love your mont blanc. i personally want the marilyn one. or is the greta garbo one. anyway, it looks all retro and gorgeous. must work on husband for that one..or just buy it myself in the duty free in singapore…

despite the pans (which to be fair were le cruset), it sounds like mr. spud has it goin’ on…

  8. Your MrSpud is terrific. And hilarious. About that no present thing? I’m betting the present you bought for yourself more than made up for it. Yes?

  9. Wow so romantic. J wouldn’t know romance if it bit him on the nose!

  10. It’s not often I get pen envy, but I think I have after seeing your one!

Was MrSpud trying to claw himself out of the Grudge Book with the hotel surprise? Sounds utterly divine! MrDoodles has a thing or two to learn…

  11. I have a nice (though not as swanky as yours) pen which my sister bought me for Christmas last year. it only gets used for greetings cards but it is such a nice thing to own. I wish my handwriting did it justice though! I also wish I wasn’t still like the 8 year old with her first stypen – covered in ink.

  12. I was given a Mont Blanc pen by a child at school as an end of term present. I had no idea about them at the time and gave it to my uncle as a crap Xmas present as I was holding a grudge for a crap present they’d given me. My auntie got something else I’d recycled. I hold on to the fact that it must have been a fake – but I’m not sure. He was delighted anyway. I should have stuck it on ebay- sob!

  13. I own a Mont Blanc Meisterstuck ballpoint pen. Has anyone had the same problem as me in that the colour of the black ink has changed in the last two years and is now more grey? It is not as strong a black and weaker in colour than a $2 pen.
I sent back my refills back to the Sydney Mont Blanc store. The refills were damaged in the postal service and Mont Blanc has now said they are unable to help me, in spite of the product being faulty!
Great customer service for a ‘premium’ product! Be warned…
