The Mysterious Incident of the Pebble on the Beach
Posted under Photography, Witterings
Of all the pebbles on all the beaches in all the world….we found this one…one in a million, just nestling on the beach like this. Who scribbled on it, and why? Is there treasure buried there? Are they just showing off..if I had a million pounds I’d probably keep it quiet rather than hand out stones inscribed with my net worth on them but then there’s nowt so queer as folk.
We left it there to puzzle generations to come but now I feel twitchy and wish we’d kept it. What if it’s a lucky stone? What if you rub it and a million quid falls in to your lap? Alas I think the chances of finding it again are pretty slim. Say, one in a million?
Whilst I was puzzling the pebble, the megaboys were flying a kite for the first time in their little lives. It was quite a lot of fun…

…it flew up so high in the sky…
..big boy Bertie was In Charge of winding it in…it’s a serious job…

…Diggy thought it was just all too exhausting for words.

Good God girl.. I would have picked it up and mailed it to Julochka! although it’s not pretty per se… just unusual. and I always say there’s nowt so queer as folks… one of my fave’s but it’s hard to translate to the yanks. they don’t get it, that’s cos they’re all queer!!! oh how I love pidgeonholing.
‘lo Ali…yes I did ponder keeping it for Julochka…but then it’s a bit crap really isn’t it? Kind of ‘Oh, here, accept this not very interesting pebble that some random scribbled on’. I think it needs a knitted hat or something to make it worthy?
I would think that nowt and queer in the same sentence is too much for most Americans, and who can blame them?!!
Wow that is so weird and funny and fantastic! I would so have kept it. Yet more gorgeousness of your boys
I think Julie would have loved it… not because it’s so pretty or anything, but just because you just happen to find it… like you said of all the beaches and all the pebbles… oh well, don’t mean to make you feel bad that you didn’t pick it up… I would have left it there too… for fun… so others can have a blog post about it too (ha..ha) Anyways… great shot of your boys again… your pictures are always so sharp and bright… spill it… what’s your secret??
Hello Mari my love xx I know, I’m kicking myself…I think Julie would have loved to see the blog post and get the stone. Ah well.
Pictures, well I take a LOT and reject a lot. And then I process using Lightroom which lifts them! xx
I think that “there’s nowt so queer as folks” is perfectly self-explanatory (but perhaps I’ve lived amongst British folk too long to be objective?).
At least you have a PICTURE of the mystery . . . but it might be fun to see if you can find the pebble again.
The pictures of the megaboys are just so wonderful. Diggy looks like a little angel in that last one. I think that you could definitely have a successful career out of photographing cherubs . . . or are you only inspired by your own?
I’m quite proud that I got the “there’s nowt so queer as folks”. The things I learn while blogging…
Oh, those megaboys… they are the cutest of the cutest! I have two cute nieces… are your boys spoken for? :)
I’m totally with B! I got it the fist time and didn’t even have to re-read and think “what the heck are those Brits talking about!”
I like the rock too but not sure I would have kept it either. But then again I’d probably be kicking myself too.
Your megaboys are just too too cute. Seriously.
The second photo of your boys is my absolute favorite. Their postures and facial expressions capture the spirit of pure glee and fun.
i love the idea of leaving the rock for someone else to find! I wonder who created the rock in the first place? Makes me want to get out my Shaprie and and create some stones.
And your mega boys…the kite, their gazes, the joy…it’s all so wonderful and beautiful!
What a funny thing to find haha. And those little boys of yours are sooooo adorable!!
have a great week!
The boys are mega-cute :)
As for the rocks, respect for the person who goes to the beach carrying a highlighter with them. I have all kinds of junk in my beach bag but nothing suitable for writing on pebbles…
One of the few things I really miss here in rural Ireland is my morning read of the fabulous German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung. But reading your blog while sipping my expresso as almost as fun and as informative. I went to Wikidedia to learn more about Suffolk, about Britten, about Alderburgh, about the Scallop not being appreciated by everybody… thank you for your many specks of inspiration!
Yes, “there’s nowt so queer as folks”, that’s why blogging is so great. They totally fulfill my need for gossip in a much more interesting and constructive way than reading silly magazines.
I would leave the stone for others to stumble upon it. Whoever left it there must be quite a character.
Thanks everyone….Bee, I don’t have the patience to photograph children. I do my own out of necessity, but I did a quick photoshoot of my friend’s girls and it was SO stressful. I do much better with casual snaps, when the opportunity arises!
I’m impressed with the non English ladies ‘getting’ the nowt so queer as folk…many English people struggle with that LOL.
these photos of your boys are just WONDERFUL.
Oh that pebble!! Oh, that pebble! I so want to know who did that. I love, love, love people who think like that. Who act on their thoughts and who make me think. Oh, I LOVE this post!!
What a great little story. Also amusing is the fact that the day you posted this blog entry I called mine…. ‘nowt so funny as folk’. How weird. I realise yours is the default version of the phrase but I am drawn to the alliterative ;)
