Feline woes

I am really going off Parker. I’ve moaned before about his killing tendencies but he’s really stepped up his campaign of terror in recent days. We found a trail of bird feathers and poo (nice) around the house when we got back from our Christmas trip a few days ago. No amount of hunting revealed a carcass anywhere so, with little conviction if truth be told, we assumed Parker had kindly slung his prey outside again once he was done with it. Oh…how…wrong…

This morning I put my foot in to my wellington boot and was very puzzled by the obstacle at the bottom…kind of round and soft and OH MY GOD FEATHERY.  MrSpud was immediately summoned as he is In Charge of horrible things. Alas he confirmed the worst. There was a dead bird in my boot, and a mountain of the poor creature’s poo too.

It’s hard to know what to be more upset about. Dead creatures in my boots, the foot to dead creature contact or the folly that led me to believe buying expensive leather lined (and thus really hard to clean) wellies was a good idea.

I’m sure I heard that damn cat laughing at me, Mutley style as I attempted not to simultaneously scream and vomit. I’m considering getting a dog out of spite. That’ll learn him.

Happy Hooker

Posted under 39 things to do before you're 40

Before I begin…this is my 200th post. That’s a lot of wittering in 6 months…

Anyway…and I’m off! I’ve made a start on my 39 things to do before I’m 40 list. This afternoon I lay on my bed and quietly, and badly, learnt how to crochet. It wasn’t easy, or pretty, and I didn’t make a lot of progress if I’m honest. But there was definite hookyness going on. Ideally I’d have a photo to share but then Parker, the cat, started to ‘help’.

Here he is thinking about his technique…

…trying it on for size…how do I look?

…then he went in for the kill…

…faster than the speed of light…look at him go…KILL KILL KILL (the crochet)…

There, done it. Crochet…it’s lip smackin’ good..

Camera Club…roll up for a Photo-A-Day project in 2010

Posted under Camera Club

I’m just two photos away from completing my first Photo-A-Day 365 project WHOOPEEE and, despite vowing not to do it again, it seems I’m hooked on the damn thing. So, Photo-A-Day 2010 here I come! Julochka has started a new Flickr group for us bleeps here so if you’d like to play along and join the Blog Camp 365 group, please click on the link to ‘join this group’ and we’ll let you in. We’re quite keen to limit membership to ‘known’ bloggy pals at first so if you could mention who you are, how you found us and/or your blog URL that would be helpful.

Very few rules for the group…in short (a) take a photo every day and (b) post it to the group when you feel like it. From experience, I would suggest you upload them as regularly as you can. It’s SUCH a chore doing it in large batches! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the task if you need to sort/upload more than a couple at a time. Also, it’s fun to write a little commentary for each photo…it helps bring the photo alive for the viewer, and it means you’ll quickly build up a photojournal of your year. Plus, it’s great material for your blog.  Think about how you’d like to catalogue your photos in advance. I’ve done mine by month (so I have sets for PAD January 2009, PAD February 2009 etc etc) but you might want to create one set called ‘Photo-A-Day 365 2010′. Finally, tag your photos! It takes about 30 seconds but will save you all kinds of bother later on when you are searching for a photo you want to look at, or use on your blog, but can’t remember when you took it. You just need to add a few words to describe the photo.

I have mostly enjoyed the Photo-A-Day project in 2009, but there have been times when it’s felt like a total slog and I’ve wanted to give up. It’s HARD to take a really interesting, creative photo every day. It’s good to have a few ideas up your sleeve for shots you can set up when inspiration is low, or use Flickr as a source of inspiration.

But I really recommend it. Nothing has improved my photos more than regular practice, and the discipline of the 365 project forces you to practice and try different things. And it doesn’t mean you need a fancy big girl camera either, that’s not an excuse!

Enough preaching. Here is the first photo of my 365 project….um, not very good is it?

And here is a picture of the same top, taken a few weeks ago…phew, it’s an improvement! So strap your camera to your face, join the Blog Camp 365 group and get clicking.

Town of my noble birth…ah, blessed art thou Weston-super Mare…let’s overlook the fact that Jeffrey Archer is thou Lord…and the fact that the sea is NEVER in and you have to walk a mile for a paddle…and the fact that your nickname of Weston-super-Mud is so well deserved…anyway, thou art blessed amongst faded English seaside towns and we heart you.

I’m visiting my Dad and his wife as part of our Christmas round robin trip. Today we braved the cold for a run around the beach. Brrrrrrrr….

Twas the night before Christmas

Posted under People I love

…and Granna, MrSpud’s mother, read’ Twas the night before Christmas’ to the boys from a book that belonged to MrSpud’s brother in the early 1970s, snuggled on the bed in MrSpud’s childhood bedroom. It’s the first time the Megaboys have heard that poem, such a lovely moment to watch their grandmother read it to them on this special, magical night. They sat quiet and absorbed throughout and went to bed so nicely…before boinging around for hours with sheer excitement. Father Christmas has been and filled their stockings, but they haven’t noticed yet…well, let’s see how long that lasts.

Good night all x

Pig Woman Jan

Posted under People I love, Photography

It’s still snowy. What to shoot but lovely pal Pig Woman Jan…she’s not a pig but she is a woman and her name is Jan. She stables her horse on the farm where we live and we joint owned the pigs with her and our neighbour, who owns the farm. Much of her pig is currently stored in our freezer and thus we are bonded f…o…r…e…v…e…r….or at least until the meat runs out …

Luckily she is as mad as a snake. Not just because her idea of fun is dressing up a big old cape and getting on her horse for a snowy photoshoot, oh no this just the tip of the iceberg. It’s her new coat that confirms her bonkerdom. She has knitted a coat made from doghair. A dog that she owns. Yes, she has knitted a coat made from the hair of her dog. She has spent years gathering it, spinning it, dying it and then knitting in to the most amazing coat…it’s quite Joseph and his Technicolour etc etc. I should have photographed it but I was too overwhelmed by the moment. Anyway, she’s bonkers and hoorah for that. And here she is with her super and super vast horse Coco. We had a jolly time, can you tell?

This much I know

Day 3 of The Big Freeze in the UK. I’ve taken around 1,000 photos of which pretty much none are anything special. Why is snow so hard to capture?  Quite apart from getting the white balance right, I’m drawn to trying to getting the ‘whole’ to get the scale of how much snow we have. But none of the shots seem to be anything other than a big load of white. Perhaps the idea is to capture the details? Answers on a postcard please.

I used the above shot for my 365 project yesterday. Thank goodness the end of the year is in sight, I’m staggering along to the end totally devoid of inspiration and am reduced to taking photos of my washing line.  Shoot me…shoot me now…but please be sure to use a Nikon. I thank you.
