It’s beginning to feel a bit like…

…etc etc etc. I’m writing my Christmas cards. A task so mind numbingly boring that scooping out my own eyeball with a spoon and eating it would be more fun. I’m alleviating the worst of the tedium and the taste of the envelopes (MOO are you listening? Yuck to your gum…pity the fool who has 100 cards to write) with wine. What else?

I’m feeling the love though and would like to add some of you lovely bloggy pals to the list. So leave a comment and tell me your WORST Christmas chore and what you do to make it more tolerable.  The first 10 to leave a comment will get a Christmas card from me (email me your addy!) and, bonus, a little Christmas present for the funniest response (doesn’t have to be in the first 10).

Come on, make me laugh. I hate this chore. Only one thing for it…down the hatch and bottoms up, chin chin.

  1. The worst is cleaning up the reindeer poop after Santa visits! :-)

  2. Oh…wait…what I do to make it more tolerable…I behave naughtily enough to only get one pressie…Santa isn’t parked at my house for long, which really cuts down on the amount of aforementioned reindeer poop to scoop.

  3. My worst chore is decorating the tree. Every year I’m desperate to do it and then when it comes to it its actually quite boring, and I spend the whole time directing the children round the tree so we dont end up with 100 baubles on one branch. And what do i do to make it more tolerable?? I discretely rearrange things when the children aren’t looking and basically chuck it all on as quickly as i can!

  4. The worst Christmas chore for me was always decorating the tree – don’t get me wrong, I love the tree when it is up and never want to take it down, but the putting it up is such a tedious chore. Therefore, we always did it on my Mom’s birthday, December 1st, to make it seem more festive and a party thing. This year it seemed insurmountable to do it without her and I was dreading it. And then, the day after her birthday, an ornament fell off the shelf when I was walking by in a store. I went to replace it on the shelf. It was a plain white one. But here’s the kicker. I turned it over and, I swear to Odin, Zeus, Universe and the God of your choice, it had her name on it. Catherine. That very same day, I put up the tree, with that ornament prominantly displayed. And I enjoyed every second of it, remembering all the funny times we did it in the past. I will never find the tree decorating a chore again.

Sorry it’s not funny, but I wanted to share. Thanks for all your posts Spud. They have made the past two months much more bearable for me. Like a little funny hug in the mail each day. Much Hugs! Sarah

  5. Shopping for christmas dinner. I am dreading it this year. I’m having everyone round here, but have visions of buying a big turkey, and then getting snowed in and having noone here to help me eat it!!

What am I doing to make it more bearable? Putting it off as long as possible! And deciding what sweeties to buy when I go to the supermarket!!

  6. I abhor hanging the lights on the house. The only things worse is bringing them back inside in a month.

My husband had the right idea when he suggested that this year instead of hanging lights on the house, we just turn on the porchlight.

  7. Worst Christmas chore ever ….having Christmas dinner with my mother in-law! Every year a drama. She was always in tears about nothing, telling us that for the rest of the year they had to live on water and bread because the dinner was so expensive. Mark lying on the floor during dinner playing with the dog out of pure boredom. ;)Oh..the joy of Christmas.
What I did to make it tolerable…..I moved away to a land far far away.
I´m definitely in her grudge book! ;)

  8. Believe it or not I absolutely hate shopping!!! I love to give gifts but they have to be the RIGHT gift, i really beat myself up about it!! So here’s what I do… I set out with good intentions… buy myself a bunch of gifts and then some red wine… go home and drink the wine and sit there admiring all my lovely self gifts. Then I tell people we’ve had a hard year and won’t be giving gifts this year but we love them all dearly!!! LOL!!!

  9. My worst chore is all the damn blow jobs I have to give to get the damn DIAMONDS!!!!!

  10. I’d have to say it’s the Christmas cards…..I don’t mind doing the cards so much, but going to post office is the WORST….mailing packages sucks, too. I still have a Christmas present I intended to send to some friends in England from 2005! I know, I’m crap……maybe I’ll send it this year!

  11. I’m glad I’m across the pond from you, too far to throw anything at…I can’t think of a single thing I dread doing for Christmas! I love it all! Every single thing…the shopping, the crowds, the wrapping, the cooking, the cleaning, the family, the cards, the tree, the lights…I find it all glorious. Last year we had just moved and we had a very minimalist Christmas, but it was still Christmas. Oh wait, I’ve got something…when the tree dies before Christmas…picking up the needles and ornaments off the floor after they fall…now that is a real pain.

  12. The worst is getting to where we celebrate Xmas–i.e. Bulgaria–because it is about 15 hours driving from here to there. We usually break the journey in two by visiting my parents (who are kind of half way between), otherwise lots of good music and plenty of snacks for kids do the trick. It also helps if there is no snowstorm, thick fog, heavy rain, or ice on the road (we’ve had all).

  13. My worst Christmas task is spending time with my grandmother…We call her wicked G. So how do I handle this…wine of course. It makes her snide comments funny!

I’m a bit of a grinch. I don’t do holiday cards, decorate, or listen to x-mas music.

  14. I truly love seeing the kiddos get excited about Christmas, but it is such a chore with all the decorating, shopping, and cooking. But the absolute worst is the prude sister-in-law that comes for every holiday and complains about all our “vices”. You’d think she was 80 instead of 30. How do I cope? I move from drinking wine to drinking whiskey in front of her.

    Merry Christmas!

  16. Just thought I’d say hello. My worst XMAS (as opposed to Christmas) chore is participating in the whole bloody circus. Full stop. Our house is very nearly a Santa-free zone but now that Liv Jr and Lady Clicke-Liv are suffering from late-20s-getting-on-in-the-world syndrome, we do at least succeed in getting together for a rare convivial time. Give me another 30 years (and no grandchilden) and I might actually start to enjoy it. But then again, I’ll be 85 and a miserable old grouch in my own right and won’t need the X-word as an excuse.

Goes without saying of course …. A miserable old grouch is for life, not just for XMAS.

  17. Hate writing Christmas cards too but just wanted to say that VEG’s comment had me in tears.
