The Afghan is slowly taking shape. I’ve been making it for a month now and I’m pleasantly surprised how fast it’s coming along. Today we put all the squares on the floor to see how near/far it is from being ‘enough’. The tally is 55 squares done, 25 to go. I’ve set myself a target of completing the final 25 by next Sunday, because that’s the kind of crazy kid I am…I know how to live…
But then I think the really tedious boring bit starts. Look at all those loose ends that need darning in. On 80 squares. Scream. Then they need sewing together. Scream. And then I’ve planned to granny around the whole thing. THREE TIMES. Scream scream scream.
Much worse, I think I’ll have to block every single one of those 80 squares. Looking at them all laid out it’s very clear that there are ‘early’ (ie. beginner) squares and ‘late’ (ie. a little bit beyond learner) squares. The ‘early’ squares are pretty loose and baggy compared with the neat and tight ‘late’ ones. Loose grannies, gosh now there’s a thought…

So, crocheting bloggy people, talk to me about blocking please?
Oh, and Buzz Lightyear zoomed in to inspect my work and no doubt found it lacking (insufferable little know all that he is). “Buzz Lighter”, that’s what Diggy calls him….generally followed by his battlecry….”To infinity…and….THE END!!!”.
That’s actually very deep for a 3 year old. Move over existentialism….

Dang how in the heck do you stay sane with a project like that??? but think of it this way… one day someone will say my Granny made this and then she went Bonkers!!!!!
Darning? Granny? Blocking? All double dutch to me. Do they not sell blankets in deepest Suffolk?!
Ethan pronounces his name “Buzz Light-yar”. Imagine a 4 yr old doing a Sloane Ranger accent, saying Buzz Light. Yah?
So funny, so I get him to repeat it a good half-dozen times while I giggle and then wonder if he’ll get beaten up at the local school for his ‘posh’ (Cornish???) accent.
The Crochet Police don’t know where you live… if you really don’t want to block, you don’t “have” to, if it’s acrylic. If it’s a different type of yarn, then you’ll need to consider blocking, indeed.
If you ever decide to venture to making another one, you might want to consider the join-as-you-go method, so you won’t lose your sanity weaving in the ends.
You have a lovely afghan there in the making, very nice colors.

just be careful that he doesn’t start trying to light buzz lighter with, well, a lighter…
your afghan is going to be gorgeous! very well done, spud! and i’ve got no idea about blocking, i’ve just seen how people do it on flickr..it involves pins and a carpeted floor as near as i can tell. therefore, i will never be able to block a thing. should i manage to crochet something. which is unlikely.
Its Beautiful!
Oh Spud, they are gorgeous. Very impressive! I think of crocheting as a meditative, relaxing activity…not so in your part of the world I see. What heresy are the women in the pub spouting? A new Olympic event; Speed Crochet? I propose a new zen attitude for your beautiful heirloom. Enjoy the process my friend.
That’s going to be beautiful. I think the ‘rustic’ feel of some of the squares will only add to it’s charm. Imagine the memories it will evoke when you’re old (and deaf) with it over your knees. You’re doing something very special there.

I’m very glad I’ve discovered weaving in ends as I go, and will be joining as i go next time. I found blocking unbearably tedious to do but worthwhile. I only made a dolly blanket from my summer garden squares, I wussed out after 16 as the colours were wrong! I’ll blog it in the next couple of days just so you can larff at another #crochetfail
Oh but that is fab – but yes sewing in those ends would be my worst part
Ok, stupid question I’m sure but… do you make all the squares first and then stitch them together? Awesome project Spud. I know NOTHING about crocheting
Loose grannies is cracking me up. I think this should be your new photo project. You could do a week of loose grannies. Pictures and words to go with.
Bwaahahaha! I love the Buzz comment – Go Diggy! And what an incredible amount you have done! I am with you though, I get to that point and kind of peter out… Which is why I no longer crochet! Lots of little projects stuffed in a bag in a closet somewhere… And loose grannies??? I can hardly breathe for laughing at the thought!!!
Oh! Oh! It’s going to be fab-U-lous. I’ve just got into crocheting so haven’t got a clue about blocking but I love. On the off chance you find yourself in shropshire one monday night I’m setting up a crochet group at our local pub. No? How sad.
What pattern did you use for your grannies?
I’ll help you tuck in all those loose ends. what day, what time, and where? wouldn’t that be loverly?
Muy bueno grasias
