First Day at School

Bertie went to his Big School today for a ‘settling in’ morning. I’ve no idea what it involved other than ‘a drink, a story, playing in the dragon’s cave and then you came to get me’. That’s a big improvement on his usual response to, ‘What did you do at nursery today?’ which is, ‘Nothing’. Great. So that’s money well spent then…

Here’s a quick iphone snap of Mr B having a last minute cuddle with His Love, our neighbours’ daughter who also went for her settling in session too. Bertie loves Imogen, but Imogen loves another. It’s a complicated 4 year old love ‘thing’. But, when the chips are down, these two stick together and what better way to start school than with a reassuring hug from a friend you’ve known since you were born?

We arrived at school, they went in to the classroom and I hung around in the doorway for a bit with Imogen’s father looking, and feeling, like a spare part. It was quickly apparent we weren’t required, so we shouted goodbye and they hardly even glanced at us, murmuring something that could have been ‘bye’ but quite possibly was ‘will you just get out of here you’re embarrassing us’. So we left and that was that.

Isn’t there supposed to be a bit of crying and clinging on? Or is that just for the parents? Sniff.

  1. Aww, what a sweet photo! And how exciting and scary all at once!

  2. Oh bitter sweet! Sounds like he loved it given he feedback to you! Violet always says “we played…” and that’s about it. Ditto re money well spent!

Hope they both enjoyed it x

  3. all I get from Isaac is a withering look and “I did EVERYTHING”

  4. such a sweet snapshot.

i remember the days and weeks before i started school and the “big people” telling me what an important step that was. i just didn’t get what they were talking about and what all the fuss was about anyway. is that just the way children are? taking new challenges in their stride? — even though it will quite possibly break my heart should i have a little one leave for their first schoolday some day in the future…

    bon courage!
    x

  5. Waaaah…Mrs M…’I did EVERYTHING!’…love that, much better value for money than ‘nothing’.

Kristina, you’re so right. Children take all this stuff in their stride so much better than us ancients. I’m so excited for him, but a little bit sad too. I’m sad to break up our little trio…me, Diggy and Bertie hanging out. But it’s such a wonderful time for him.

    Wife…yup…bitter sweet. There’s a song in there somewhere ;-) x

  6. This post brought tears to my eyes…..I sat on the edge of my chair for the entire two hours they were in there – so relieved to hear it went so well! Suspect next twenty years will be us worrying while the four of them take it all in their stride!

  7. The two of them didn’t even look back, and that’s celebration city. The years at school should always be a foundation for happiness and it looks as if its headed that way. What a pleasure to share it with you and the boys, Spud. :-)

  8. I get “dunno” – money well spent too.

Settling in session this week for Sam, he’s in Caterpillars Class. He wanted Ladybirds and we 2 hours (yes 2 whole hours) of tears about this. Until I promised that one day he would be a butterfly as a result – like Lady GaGa (who is his absolute idol – who needs Ben10 when you have Lady GaGa).

  9. It sounds like he’s ready for it – lovely shot!
