What’s your passion?
Posted under Things I love

I was reminded of this by Muddling Along Mummy … don’t you love it? Soon to be hanging on the wall of my writing room, once it’s back from the framers … the Holstee Manifesto. Words to live and die by, if ever I saw some.
When I was a teenager I had a poster of Max Erhmann’s poem ‘Desiderata’ on my wall, you know the one … “Go placidly amid the noise and haste…” which I still adore. There’s a quiet stillness in his words which really touch me, a little surprising since I definitely lack quietness and stillness in my life.
But the Holstee Manifest is altogether more rousing and urgent in tone, verging on the hectoring in fact. It’s suits where I am in my life much more than Erhmann’s reflective musings. In January I declared 2011 to be the Year of JFDI (‘Just F*cking Do It’) in a bid to throw off my natural caution and fear of change. And soon I will have my Manifesto on my wall to help gather my wandering thoughts, hopes and dreams and distill in them in to what is important. Then I will just need a shove in the right direction to JFDI.
‘Ask the next person that you meet what their passion is’. Can you imagine doing that? But how much more joyful than the usual things that we ask…’Where are you from? What do you do for a living? Are you married? Do you have children?’ blah blah blah. WHO CARES? Let’s get at it and find out the really important stuff about each other. Let’s throw off the bonds of convention, let’s get out of our boxes and not define ourselves by our age, our occupation, our marital status … let’s put the every day on hold for a minute or two shall we? Let’s ‘Live our dream and share our passion’.
So, YOU are the next person that I am meeting and so I ask you this:
What is your passion?

Love this. I’ve got to go out now but will definitely come back to this.
I adore this. Life is my passion, my family, just squeezing everything out of it that I can.
Photography. Thanks to you! I’m studying it this Autumn :-)
WOOHOO!! That’s fabulous xx
Wow! What’s your passion? That question will be rattling around in my head for the day. Thanks for reminding me of the Desiderata. I need to draw that out of the drawer and put it where I can see it again. This post has hit me right where I needed it. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing the Holstee Manifesto on Chez Spud loving this blog – its an honor!!

My passion is putting things together in new ways.
It might be redecorating the house– planning a fun party or fundraiser– introducing one person to another– writing a blog post– or working in the garden.
The subject of what I’m doing changes, but the passion to unite remains the same.
What’s my passion? Gosh, I’m so fickle it changes every week. But mostly it’s my boys, my allotment and breastfeeding. Although I could probably bore the pants off any midwife talking about birth as well. And of course words – the reading or the writing of. Not fussed. Love them both. But what’s YOUR passion?
Joy is my passion!
Finding the joy in each day, each moment. It’s not always easy, some days go by in a blur, but if I’m mindful about it, I can find dozens of things that bring me joy!
Life IS short! This is a beautiful reminder!
My first response to this was sorting our house out!! I am slowly making it ‘mine’. My husband can’t understand why I want to decorate, but it’s changing a room, and seeing it turn into what I have in my head.
That and baking I think. A couple of years ago I would have said horse riding, but I haven’t been for the past year – I’ve been too busy doing house stuff. I really should get back into it because it WAS a passion.
Love your post.
Wow!
That is fantastic an came at just the right time
thank you
this is a brilliant idea. i’m definitely asking that of our next couchsurfer.
and perhaps also of myself. tho’ i’m not sure if myself has an answer. she’s a bit wander-y of late…
and i have a version of the max erhmann (which i thought was a commencement address) done by danish artist søren rasted under the guise of “lazyboy” that i love and was just listening to in the car earlier today. weird how that happens.
Beauty is my passion! Seeking, finding and creating it! So you see why I visit Chez Spud often…beautiful photos! I never would have guessed that you are cautious by nature…you take some great risks in your blog!

Ooh I love that Manifesto. I think I need to frame that on my wall too. A goodly reminder.
My passion is reading. It’s been rather neglected since having children, gone are the days when I never went anywhere without a book in case I could swallow a few paragraphs in a quiet moment. I know it’s just under the surface, awaiting times when both are old enough to be delving into their own paperbacks….
I already write for a living but I’d like to expand my writing and turn it into a passion rather than a job, I think.

Pig Balls are my passion. ;o)
I have so many–family, reading, living my life to the best I can and England.
Have a great week end!
